Makhamali Phool is a traditional Nepali flower used during Tihar and Bhai Tika. Its rich colour and long-lasting nature make it an important part of this festive tradition.
Makhamali Phool – Traditional Nepali Tihar Flower
Product Information
Makhamali Phool is a traditional Nepali flower closely linked with Tihar and the Bhai Tika celebration. It comes from the Globe Amaranth flower, also known as Gomphrena globosa. The flower has a rich purple or magenta colour and keeps its shape for a long time. This long-lasting nature gives Makhamali Phool a special meaning during Tihar. Sisters traditionally place Makhamali flower garlands around their brothers’ necks during Bhai Tika. The garland represents love, protection and a wish for a long life. Makhamali flowers are also valued for their bright colour and lasting appearance. Gundu in Bhaktapur is known as an important area for growing these flowers in the Kathmandu Valley. Farmers usually harvest the flowers during the festive season. Makhamali Phool is therefore more than a decorative flower. It is an important part of Nepali culture and family traditions during Tihar.
Usage
Use Makhamali Phool for traditional Tihar and Bhai Tika celebrations. It can be made into a garland and placed around a brother’s neck during the Bhai Tika ceremony. The flowers can also be used for festive decoration. Keep the flowers in good condition before the ceremony and handle them gently to preserve their shape and colour.
